Methanotrophs are a type of organism that are going to change how the world works when facing the issues of global methane pollution. The reason for the recent testing with the organisms is because of a special enzyme that can only be found in methanotrophs called methane monooxygenase (MMO). MMO is one of the only ways that the Earth breaks down methane. Methanotrophs use the break down of methane to create energy that they are able to sustain themselves on. One special thing about the MMO is that it uses copper as a catalyst to cause the reaction to start. Breaking down methane into energy is really no simple feat either, methane is one of the most stable natural structures making MMO truly impressive.
